Five things to consider before going carfree

Whether you’re trying to cutback on spending, or taking advantage of the sunny spring weather (at least in Phoenix), or maybe you want to promote a more sustainable lifestyle, many people are letting the car collect dust in the garage and turning to good old fashion exercise and mass transit.
I decided to experiment with the idea of going carfree back in December when light rail first started carrying passengers in Phoenix. The experience is rewarding on so many levels, but a serious reality check must be considered before you decide to dive in head first. Having said that, where there’s a will…
While my adventures have made for some entertaining and eye opening experiences to blog about, you’ll definitely want to keep the following things in mind before ditching your car keys in the kitchen drawer.
FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO CONSIDER BEFORE GOING CARFREE
1) Realize your limitations
Ask yourself what are some common errands you run using a car? Which of your errands or tasks require a car? Will you be able to get to those places using an alternative means of transportation?
The biggest concern for me here was how would I take my dogs to the veterinarian or the groomers. Here in Phoenix, light rail rules require you crate your pets if they are not being used as guide animals. This could be alot to handle depending on the size of your pet and how far you have to go.
2) Familiarize yourself with your surroundings
Running your errands will become easier once you get to know what services are offered in your neighborhood. Upon checking, you’ll see there’s a dry cleaner right under your nose, a stylist down the street to cut your hair, or even a great place to grab some breakfast on your way to work.
3) Decide your third tier mode of transportation
Once you decide to make the jump to either carfree or car-lite status, you need to keep in mind what modes of transportation are at your disposal. The first tier is your primary means (walking, wheelchair, etc.), your second tier is typically a form of mass transit, and your third tier is usually a bike, skateboard, roller skates, etc. Many people prefer to rely on the first two. Here in the desert where you may want to get in and out of the heat in a hurry, I suggest a third tier to get from point A to point B.
4) Running late? Have plan B and C in your back pocket
The ol’ standby line ‘the light rail was running late’ wears a little thin after the third time.
(So I hear)
Anywho, keep the phone number of a friend handy in case you need to hitch a ride (carpooling is ok) or better yet, know which bus line makes a bee line to your work. And if all else fails, have the number of a taxi cab in your speed dial. Discount Taxi here in Phoenix has a Toyota Prius fleet. Eco-friendly and convenient!
5) Don’t spend the money you save
FACT: going carfree will save you more than just the money spent on gas/insurance premiums/car payments. It’s amazing how much we spend while driving around town. Even if you go car-lite instead of carfree, you will soon see some extra money sitting in your wallet.
On that note, consider putting the money you save into one of those Suze Orman endorsed savinigs accounts. Or better yet, give a little to your community. I’ve made a few donations to homeless shelters here in town. These days, you never know when you’ll need to take advantage of the wonderful non-profits in your own backyard.
Finally, use social media to connect with others who are carfree. You’ll be surprised how many people are doing the same thing. Social media platforms like Twitter or even Meetup.com can be a great support group, and may be able to help you with the ins and outs of enjoying the area without the hassle of a car.
