Three local bands rocked the Phoenix Art Museum Friday night during Train Tracks quarterfinal action.
Train Tracks is a weekly event on the Phoenix light rail. Every Friday afternoon a different local band plays an acoustic set during rush hour commute. You see and hear the acts here.
The quarterfinal round coincided with the popular First Friday art walk in Downtown Phoenix.
Now that you have some background, let’s get down to business. This event KICKED ASS.
Picture it: Free admission to one of the most stunningly beautiful venues in Phoenix, surrounded by gorgeous pieces of art in an a huge open space, and amazing local talent singing and performing their hearts out.
Here’s the first band Mikel Lander and the Sugar Thieves.
You can hear one of the band’s songs here.
The next band on stage was Dry River Yacht Club.
You can hear one of their songs here.
There was also a third band called What Laura Says in the quarterfinal round. I couldn’t stay to watch because I had to meet my Twitter pal @dubstep1 for drinks at Portland’s Restaurant. But you can see one of the band’s Train Track performances here.
If you’ve never been inside the Phoenix Art Museum, I would highly suggest you take advantage of the free nights on First Friday. Just be sure to leave a little somethin’ in the donation box at the entrance.
We are so lucky to have such a great facility to showcase some fabulous works of art. The combination of the music, art and seeing the latest fashion exhibit on the second floor made the evening a great experience.
Or maybe it was the Ciroc Vodka cocktails.
Anywho, it was an amazing night. The museum is also featuring a Blumenschein exhibit (info is here) and a fashion exhibit (info here) which has several gowns by designers like Gaultier and Azzedine Alaia. And while you were strolling around in between acts, World famous Rani “g” was spinning upstairs with Ben Puccio on the sax and Bob Powers on the guitar as accoustical backup. FUN FUN FUN!!!
Here’s Dry River gettin’ down to Rani:
And here’s Rani and the boys:
The museum only allows visitors to take pictures without a flash and only in certain rooms. A Keith Haring piece is part of those works.
What a night. The perfect end to a long week, and the right way to start a weekend.
Right now I’m blogging from my new fav hangout, the Clarendon Hotel and new restaurant Gallo Blanco. I love this place! Here’s some info on the hip and happenin’ Midtown Phoenix boutique hotel. Stop and see Steve at the bar for drinks if you go.
I’m off to my Saturday events! Will post more happenings around Phoenix later today.
