A big warning for Phoenix light rail passengers

The transit agency charged with carrying passengers safely around the Valley is hoping to get a message out along the Phoenix light rail.
METRO crews have been busy painting the words “DO NOT CROSS TRACKS” along the sides of platforms where passengers get on and off the trains.
“This is and has been a main point in our safety message,” says METRO spokesperson Hillary Foose. “This signage is an additional deterrent to help in the light rail safety efforts.”
Light rail trains have been operating since December of 2008 along a 20 mile starter line that runs through Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa. While there have been no accidents involving pedestrians here in the area, Valley Metro has made it a top priority to remind passengers about safety along the light rail tracks. You can read about the safety program here.
“We do have an issue of people crossing the tracks without a traffic control device, i.e. not in the crosswalk,” says Foose in an email to the Light Rail Blogger. Crossing the tracks outside of a crosswalk is against the law and dangerous.
