The new bike gets a makeover

Thanks to my friend Phoenix Cycle Chica, I bought this vintage new ride pictured above, on the trip home from Tempe.
‘Vern’ is in the process of getting some much needed TLC at Slippery Pig on Central Avenue just north of Camelback. New wheels, new chain, and maybe even some hip new handlebar pads in fashion colors!
I’m still hoping the police find my old bike after someone cut the cable on my lock and made off with it last Saturday. Read about the drama here. Meanwhile, to underscore the bike theft problem, I found out my friend’s bike was also stolen this week.
The news got me thinking: how are other cities trying to combat the problem of stolen bikes? That’s when I found this piece on Mashable. Can something like this work in Phoenix and/or Tempe?

I love Slippery Pig!!! I can’t wait to see Vern after he’s all gussied up!
And the Stolen Bikes Boston Community Alert is a great idea – it is like an Amber Alert for bikes!!

Make sure not to trick it out too much. We try to keep our commuter bikes simple to cut down on possible theft. I’m also a fan of Slippery Pig.

It definitely won’t be tricked out. In fact I’ll probably forgo removing the rust with a Brillo pad. I’m hoping that will turn away any potential thieves.
