Restaurants all along the lightrail in Phoenix are looking at ways to green their business. You may have read my post on DowntownPhoenix.com about restaurants installing bike racks to meet the growing commuting trend here in the Valley. During my research, I found out that business owners are finding low cost ways to create a space for people to park their bikes. Doug Robson of Gallo Blanco Cafe inside the Clarendon Hotel purchased this rack a few months back for $20 at a vintage store:
Robson says he had been searching for a bike rack for a few months and stumbled upon this beauty which was sitting unused outside a Scottsdale antique store. The owner didn’t have use for it, but Robson did.
“I think the necessity for bike racks is growing,” says Robson who speaks from first hand experience as he sees more and more people use the light rail and their bikes to get to his restaurant in Midtown Phoenix.
Robson says a new bike rack can cost anywhere from $300 to $500 – but you don’t need to spend that much to have one installed. Something America’s Taco Shop on 7th Avenue found out as well.
America’s Taco Shop owner Terry Bortin tells me the guys at Sun Cyclery bike shop donated these two racks to the popular Coronado District restaurant.
Want to help green Phoenix and find a bike rack for your business or restaurant? Try looking at vintage stores or junk yards for a great find at a reasonable price.
