That’s a wrap

UPDATE: Valley Metro link for lightrail safety
A commenter over on ABC15.com made an interesting observation about the new METRO lightrail advertising wrap.
At night,… it’s going to look like a “space” between railcars,… -just enough space for a distracted driver to squeeze through.

Grand Canyon University is one of the first to advertise on light rail vehicles, pictured below. I took the picture as the train pulled up to the McDowell station around 11pm on Sunday night. What do you think? Is the wrap too dark? Just right? Whatever your thoughts on the subject, this is a good time to remind your friends that there are trains rolling through Central Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. Please be aware of all traffic signals near the tracks. For more information on safety around the light rail, or to familiarize yourself with the rules of the road near the tracks, check out Valley Metro’s website here.

I think the advertisements are a great way to offset lightrail costs and to feature Phoenix businesses. Wouldn’t it be great if local businesses were given a discount for lightrail wrap advertising?

You just gave me an idea for a post!

See the white line running along the bottom? It’s not part of the ad, it’s part of the train… the reflective strip that headlights happen to shine on at night. And the ends of the car aren’t covered, so head on it’ll look like the same light rail. I am sure safety was well thought out, if they covered the reflective strip, then I’d be worried.

Thanks for pointing out the reflective strip – I did not know.

To counterpoint the comment left on ABC15.com, the driver shouldn’t be ‘distracted’ in the first place. While I realize this is a stretch in modern-day urban driving, it is ultimately the driver’s responsibility to pay attention and be aware of what’s going on at intersections.

Agree. I also think his comment provided a good opportunity to raise awareness about general safety while driving around the light rail.
