Take me out to the ball game

Fellow transit buddy Yvette organized an outing with some friends to see a spring training exhibition game at the Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The Oakland Atheletics played the Milwaukee Brewers at the facility which is a short bike ride from the Priest light-rail station (Priest and Washington) and a 15 minute train ride from Downtown Phoenix. In case you didn’t know, there are 15 baseball teams in Arizona for spring training. The teams make up the Cactus League and were the subject of a story by Peter Corbett on azcentral.com:
Coming off last year’s record attendance of 1.58 million, league leaders are once again excited about another season and the boost spring training gives to Arizona’s troubled tourism industry. This is likely to be the first year that the Cactus League surpasses Florida’s Grapefruit League in attendance.
This was my first time watching a spring training game here in Phoenix. The stadium is nice, convenient to light rail and kudos to the stadium for having bike racks! We had a blast! I asked some of the people in my group what they liked about the stadium and the spring training experience:
Yvette the host: weather, baseball hats, and the Athletics #52
Irene: the weather and #52
Stephanie: a great way to start the weekend early
Ryan: the weather and quick lines at the beer concessions
So we have three votes for the weather, two votes for #52 ….
and one vote for quick lines at the concession stands. Even if you aren’t a baseball fan, there’s something for everyone at spring training in Phoenix! Need information on how to ride the light rail to the stadium? Click here. Information on other teams in the Cactus League can be found here.

I love spring training season! If you ever want to splurge a little on your ticket and help out a good cause, the Scottsdale Stadium has a VIP suite called the “Charro Lodge” with free food and drinks. Money is returned to East Valley chairities, such as the Boys & Girls Club and so many more. The stadium is between bus routes #72, 76 and 41.
