Rusty Spoke is Good for Bikes in Phoenix

The guys at Rusty Spoke Community Bicycle Collective are doing God’s work. The bicycle repair shop (located in the Bragg’s Pie Factory space along Grand Avenue in Phoenix) specializes in repairing bikes for low income residents or helping them find new ones. The end result is helping more people use pedal power to get to around town.
Founder Nathan Leach originally started Rusty Spoke in a backyard. Leach recently acquired a space inside the Bragg’s Pie space next to the guys at Fractal. “We get a lot of people who just come in a build a bike from scratch,” says Leach. “They can pay for them outright or they can do work trade.” Leach pays $8 an hour for work, which typically involves anything from patching tubes to cleaning up the shop. The money you earn goes back to paying for the bike. The business is becoming quite popular, according to their Facebook page!
As it turns out, Rusty Spoke is holding a fundraiser this Friday night at 6 p.m. The cover is $5 and the event will feature food, music and good times. Besides the fundraising aspect, the guys are also collecting recycled bike parts. Rusty Spoke is located at the corner of 13th and Grand Avenues, which is west of Central Station. More information can be found on the Facebook event page here.
May is National Bike Month. Be sure to celebrate by riding your bike to one of our delicious locally owned restaurants in the heart of Phoenix. Here’s a list of establishments along the light rail that also have a safe place to park your bike.
