Your Thursday morning commute on the light rail is about to get interesting as the Phoenix Suns plan to rally fans on board trains.

METRO Light Rail recently hinted at a big announcement and they did not disappoint. The Phoenix Suns will rally light rail riders and get fans excited about the start of the 2010-11 season. From the METRO Light Rail Facebook page:

To celebrate the start of the 2010/2011 season, join METRO light rail and the Phoenix Suns for an “On-Board Fan Rally” tomorrow, October 28, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Phoenix Suns Gorilla Groupies will surprise riders along the line handing out Suns memorabilia, ticket coupons and an opportunity to win FREE tickets!

The home opener is Friday night against the LA Lakers, a game that promises to be action packed considering the rivalry between the two teams. I saw the two teams play during playoffs last season when the Suns Beat LA. My friend Meghanne and I had so much fun sitting up in the nose bleeds and nearly getting caught in the middle of a fight between two women. Good times…

If you’re going to the game Friday night at US Airways Center, remember your ticket to the game acts as your paid fare card for the entire evening as part of the Rail Ride program. Come early and stay late in downtown Phoenix and enjoy some of the great restaurants, bars and lounges in our urban core. Suggestions on places to eat and drink within walking distance of the light rail can be found here and here.

Even though the official anniversary date is still a week away, METRO celebrated one year of mass transit in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. How did METRO help passengers celebrate the occasion? The transit agency and several local businesses along the 20 mile starter line got together and offered up prizes, discounts and other freebies for a Rider Appreciation Day. Fare machines dispensed a ‘golden pass’ to 30 lucky riders, each one good for two tickets to a US Airways Center event. In addition, the ticket holders were also entered into a VIP drawing for other fabulous prizes like an opportunity to sit on the warmup bench before a Phoenix Suns game.

I went for a ride on the train to check out my adopted station…and also to try my luck at getting a golden pass. I didn’t win, but a passenger on my train did. Her name is Penny (sorry for the fuzzy picture) and she lives in a suburb north of Phoenix. Penny tells me since the light rail doesn’t pass by her home, she doesn’t ride the train often. However tomight she and a friend decided to reduce their time behind the wheel. The two met at a station in Phoenix and took a train downtown to see a show. Not only did Penny save money on gas and parking, but she also won a pretty cool prize thanks to METRO’s business partners.

Congratulations, Penny! And thank you METRO for giving people an alternative to driving.
